My mother shows Siberian Huskies and has been a breeder since 1972. I've owned Siberians most of my adult life and just lost our almost 16 year old a few months ago. We rescued a Elkhound puppy 2 years ago and fell in love with the breed. We go hiking, camping, etc. And she goes with us. I'm a NDGAA Groomer. I have twins that are 16 and love animals. Both National Honor students. One wants to be a vet. We also have 3 cats. I'm not interested in breeding but would like a quality and healthy dog. Willing to travel or ship. Please let me know if you have anything. Thanks

Hi guys, its me Kari Olson... I am looking for a healthy adult (5-8 yrs old) male elkhound who likes people, cats, other dogs, and small dogs. He needs to be good to bitches.. I want a sweet boy, and one preferably not afraid of thunder.... or marks inside. I can neuter if he is not neutered. I prefer a rehome from a breeder so i know the background of the dog. I have contacted some breeders and turned down dogs too young, one with a fear of men, and one with unknown disease history. I am retired, and have a huge fenced front yard for the dogs to play. Chilly, who i got last summer is lonesome since I lost my last male, Briskke, and this big yard just begs for running and playing to happen. I will travel.

I currently live alone (maybe an Elkhound can help with that?) but work very close by. I'm hoping to have this Elkhound as a hiking buddy and fellow adventurer. I've had dogs growing up and am confident in my abilities to take care of one. I'm also doing all the research I can on Elkhounds, specifically, so that I know what I'm getting into. I am 23 years old, female, working full-time at Thermo Fisher Scientific. We've had dogs all my life and raised them from puppyhood to old age, and I would like to get a puppy myself. We currently have two cats who live in a separate part of the house from the dog, and one rescue puppy, Harley, who is now about 1.5 years old. I live with my parents by choice to save up money; the cats and dog are their's, but I play an active role in their care and consider them as much a part of my life and my parents'._x000D_

I've always admired the Elkhound breed, and it's a dog I feel I'm really interested in. I've been considering a puppy for about a year and have started searching in earnest the last few months. My primary concern is to find a friend more than anything else.

We are a married couple living on a 1906 family farm in North Dakota. We are the fifth generation on this farm (a wheat farm). Our gated yard area is about 17 acres, partly wooded and partly open fields. Companionship for our children is reason 1. We are also of Norwegian Heritage: Barstad, Haakon, Magnusson, Mehus are some of our Norwegian family names. My Wife had dogs in the past, and this farm, in the first through fourth generations, always had dogs. Our children would enjoy very much the companionship and protection offered by a Norwegian Elkhound. With five children, the animal would receive much attention and care from the entire family, and would have plenty of room to run and play. We live in a rural township, with about five families spread out over 36 square miles of farmland in NW Williams County, North Dakota.

My name is Simon and I live in the Seattle area. I'm soon to finish grad school and miss having a friend to look after and give me a sense of home. My previous dog was a border-collie mix I found in the woods so I never really got the experience of watching him grow from a puppy into the grouchy old man he was and while I enjoyed our 8 years it didn't feel like long enough. He passed away from acute kidney failure a few years ago and I said I wouldn't look towards getting another dog until I finished my grad degree so I could give him the proper life he deserved. Beyond that, my family used to raise/breed golden retrievers growing up so not having a dog in my life for this long hasn't been good for my mental health._x000D_
_x000D_
I'm honestly interested in the Norwegian Elkhound as a breed because of it's features. I love their masked faces and almond eyes and the spitzen tail and could easily see myself rubbing my head in their neck fluff whenever I need to feel a sense of home. They're a substantial size dog, but manageable, and from what I've seen get along very well with others and have a calm and friendly demeanor which is important as my current living situation has two bichon puppies in the home that would appreciate a friend._x000D_

Because of the Covid quarantine, we've been asked to work from home and in this time the lack of companionship over the last few months has been rough. I recently was informed it's very possible that we won't be returning to work until October and if i have to spend another 4 months in quarantine I would rather have someone there to enjoy it with and remind me that there's good in the world, but moreover I think I've been without a friend for too long and the timing is such that I'm in a prime position to amend that. They seem like loving dogs.

We rescued her at 18 months from a family that had never had a dog before and was a bit overwhelmed by their Elkhound (she is a typical Elkhound and very sweet - we had no problems with her!) Mayhem was our first Elkhound. We adopted her from a shelter at 9 weeks of age and she lived with us until she passed away at 15. She was the best dog on the planet, walking herself by holding her own leash, carrying groceries, fetching beer from the refrigerator and clean diapers from the baby's room 3 floors up. Sasha is so very sweet, but she was not trainable as a pseudo service dog at 18 months. She's just a great companion and very cuddly. We also have a bird. We recently lost a nearly 12 year-old rabbit and my son is very sad. He would love to raise an Elkhound and train her like we trained Mayhem. He has done research on how to ensure that an older dog is OK with a puppy introduction. Also, Sasha has been a little depressed with the quarantine and we believe it would be good for her to have some interaction - eve. if with a puppy (she does quite well with puppies at the dog park - playing and then keeping to herself when her energy runs out).

We have been thinking about expanding our family and adding another family member to it - a dog - for quite a while already, and now that our youngest is 5 years old (able to care for a family pet and be gentle with animals), we feel it would be a great time to get a dog. Why have we picked exactly a Norwegian elkhound? We had this wonderful opportunity to meet one around 3 years ago and we absolutely fell in love with this breed - how calm, confident, yet loving, gentle and playful this dog was with our children, who he had met for the very first time. We would prefer a puppy from the Hobby Breeders - a loving and caring family, who has raised their Elkies and their pups for the right reasons at home, in a family setting.

My last dog was a Norwegian elkhound. I have never loved a dog more. She was brave, loyal, sweet, kind, patient, stubborn, opinionated, and my best friend. I miss her horribly. After having had her, I cannot imagine myself without an elkhound. They are incredible. I only wish I could have one from her line.

I've been doing lots of research on them and I believe they would be a good fit for my family. We have plenty of land for an Elkhound to exercise on and we're experienced dog owners. They are a beautiful dog and seem to have a temperament that we're used to. Also, I am half Norwegian so there is a cultural reason to.

My favorite camper was an elkhound and he always greeted me with a goofy grin and a lot of love. I started learning about the breed after that and I fell in love with the solid temperament and versatility of the breed. I like that elkhounds are dogs that like to be around their people, and that seem to be up for trying something new. I'm hoping for a companion that will help me stay active and involved in the local dog community. And of course, they're beautiful dogs. _x000D_

I am a soon-to-be veterinarian looking for a companion and casual sport dog. I currently live in Minnesota but I have accepted a job in Valparaiso, IN and am in the process of signing a lease for a house with a large fenced in backyard (I'm moving in mid May). I have already been approved to own a dog at my new home. I have a background in canine behavior and training, primarily working with non-domestic canids and dog reactive dogs. One of my passions is dog training and behavior, and I'm looking forward to having a dog that I can test out various sports with. I have not had a dog I was able to try dog sports with before, so I'm hoping to try out a few and see what I (and my future dog) likes. My new home is near the Indiana Dunes National Park, so I'm hoping for a hiking and swimming buddy. I'm also going to have the opportunity to be able to bring my dog to work with me.

She started to have seizures after my husband died but somehow survived them all. She was my life. Why can't dogs live as long as we do? As I get older it gets harder to loose them. The first, my family had for 18 years from a breeder in PA. I only knew her for 6 years before she ran away at 18. It took a while to convince my mom to get another because she loved Lady so much. My little sister and I convinced her to get a puppy from the pet store in the mall (I know they are bad, but when you’re 10 years old they are amazing). We got Elka as a puppy and had her for 16 years. She did have to be put down because she had major intestinal issues and the doctor did not feel that she would make it through the surgery. My mom was done with dogs, until one of my older sister’s could not keep her dog because my nephews were allgeric to him. He was a ginormous lab (150 lb. dog) but he was a lover. He passed away about 4 years ago. Since then my mom has passed and it’s just me and my dad. He was diagnosed with stage IV cancer last year and having another companion, other than me, would be quite exciting and comforting to him.

Our 10 year old rabbit was a 3 year old rescue when our dog was 10 years of age. His name is Fred._x000D_
When I got Maddie as a puppy, I purposely ignored and discouraged her from going after squirrels, rabbits, cats or any other small animals. This paid off when we adopted Fred the bunny. We didn’t know if she’d go after him and slowly introduced them over the course of a week._x000D_
Maddie pretty much ignored him and in short order it was Fred who would seek out Maddie when she laid down and Fred would lay against her._x000D_
I had friends that had two Australian Shepherds years before Maddie came into my life. I had always felt like that breed was too high strung for my taste, but when I took in Maddie years later, I could see the effect of the Norwegian Elkhound on her mix. That’s when I fell in love with Norwegians. _x000D_

We have a stable home on the Northside of Chicago in an area with small lawns, but several parks all within minutes of where we live. Walking a dog is one of my greatest pleasures in life. I enjoy it in all seasons, but especially in winter. All three past dogs were wild about snow and I look forward to long strolls in winter and endless snowballs thrown over and over. Two of our favorite things were our Elkhound’s enthusiasm for snow and how smart and eager she was to please. She was an extraordinarily obedient dog._x000D_

Most people would describe me as a bit of lone wolf. I'm a project manager in Santa Clara, so I am away for 11 to 12 hours a day Monday through Friday. However, I'll be working from home for at least the next couple of weeks due to the lock-downs. I've been considering a canine companion for a few months and this seems like an optimal time as I'll be home to acclimate a new animal. I'll also have time to set up my yard to be more suitable for a canine while I'm away._x000D_
_x000D_
My ideal companion is a medium to medium-large canine around 1 or 2 years old, though a bit younger is OK. Will be great in a home with a single adult occupant. Coat works well in Santa Cruz’s climate year round (cool-to-cold fall trough early spring, some warm summers). A tendency to be protective of the owner is OK. Good with other dogs as I may take in another in the future (probably not for a year or so). Not aggressive around others, especially children. I don’t have kids, but would not want it to attack a child on the streets. Athletic and great on hikes or camping. Travels well for weekend road trips. Not overly stressed by crowds (e.g. at a Spartan event)._x000D_

My wife grew up with a Malamute mix and has always wanted a dog. We think the companionship a dog would bring to our home is valuable for all of us. My two year old loves animals and participates in taking care of our cats. My four year old is a special needs kid with Koolen-de Vries Syndrome. This is a genetic disorder that results in developmental delay. We are hoping some animal companionship will help him develop socially. My ultimate hope is that through our experience owning and caring for a dog, our family will learn more about life, growth, caring for others, and about ourselves._x000D_
Why an Elkhound specifically? They're not too big, not too small, an Arctic breed (a must for my wife with her Malamute experience), their friendly and brave personality, their intelligence.

We adopted an adorably stubborn 10 year old Elkhound several years ago and lost him to cancer at the age of 15. It's been 2 years and we would love to welcome another adult or senior in need of a good forever home. We would be absolutely fine with a pup with medical issues as I am a veterinarian. Before getting the Chis, we had lived with and loved over the many years a Cattle Dog mixed breed, five Collies and a Terv (back in the late 80s and 1990s when I was showing and training dogs), two retired racing Greyhounds, and two Corgis (one Pem, one Cardi). All lived 10-15 years and 7 of them I raised from puppies.I've loved Elkhounds since I was a child (late 60s, early 70s); we had two Elkhounds who were absolutely marvelous dogs. Been a long time coming but I would like to live with one again. I am retired but my husband still works and I like having a larger dog around, mostly to take long walks with as we live out in the country. I want to raise a puppy (instead of adopting an adult), first because I *love* raising puppies, and second for the safety of the Chis as the larger dog can grow up with them around.

I loved the temperament of our dog. She was devoted to me, and loved to go all over--walks, errands in the car, to our cabin, . . . . I had 5 tickborne infections, and it took years to get a clean bill of health. Rousa (Finnish for Rose, her adopter's name for her). She'd guard a bathroom door if I was using it at the time. If I was showering, she was right next to the bathtub. All the dogs we've had were wonderful, but she came along just at the right time. She *was* a therapy dog for me in many forms._x000D_
_x000D_
I work from home as a software technical writer now, which was the case with Rousa. It gave us the opportunity to take breaks when we wanted to, for fun--there's a nice dog park just a couple of blocks away, and lots of friendly neighborhood dogs (who are generally well mannered and trained). My husband did take Rousa for training after we adopted her; I wasn't capable of that at the time. We'd like a dog that loves the snow too for play in winter. _x000D_
_x000D_
My husband grew up on 55 acres in WV with 6 siblings, next to a river. He had his own dog, who traveled all over the property with him where he was working at the time. They swam in the pond with siblings as well._x000D_
_x000D_
Rousa died ~ 2 years ago, and we still miss her terribly. But with all our pets, we feel the best way to honor their memory is to adopt another who needs a good, loving home.

Up until now, we couldn't decide what and if we wanted another. We don't want just another dog, we want to love an elkhound! And a rehome pup is the answer to that. We would like an adult with history mostly known and a few years old. Maybe you can help us?
AlaskaJakeMcAllister6550 Limestone CirAnchorage99507(541) 410-22700Hello my name is Jake McAllister, my wife and I are looking for a Norwegian Elkhound. We live in Alaska and have a very active life. We live in Anchorage during the winter but the spring through fall we live at our cabin in Denali National Park. We have no other pets or kids and are looking for a family companion. _x000D_
What we are hoping for in an elkhound is a loyal friendly dog that is able to be as active as we are. We have done a lot of research on elkhounds and we feel that it is a great breed for our lifestyle and climate we live in. We are developing a lodge and will be running the lodge in the years to come. With bears in the area we have heard and read elkhounds are good defense dogs and will protect those it is loyal to. _x000D_
We are planning on having kids in the next year or two which does raise a little concern with an elkhound but we have read that elkhounds can be great with kids if you set up the proper boundaries.

VermontKristaMalaney65 Loven Lane Box 4North Ferrisburgh5473(802) 324-2761My dog was just diagnosed with diabetes and is now on insulin. My vet says I have 6-12 months left with him unfortunately. I am not looking for a puppy for now as I need to give my old boy all the attention, however I am starting to research the breed and breeders for when the time is right. I live in Vermont, would bring the dog to obedience school, but the dog would go to doggie daycare 4-days a week for socialization and play time while I work. Not sure if this breed will work with those expectations? Thank you.I have always liked the breed. They seem like they have pleasant temperaments and would make a good hiking and camping buddy. The size is perfect. I am partial to the spitz type dog.

Loosing that bond was very difficult and I am looking to add a new puppy to my life. After the corgi I am excited to be looking into a larger breed. Especially after being around my friends Golden's and pit bulls with no issue. I met an Elkhound at a puppy class and feel in love. Also, a fan of Norse mythology, the breeds heritage is another factor for me.

In doing research for the best breed for us, we're looking for good temperament, minimal barking, overall good health (the Chows had a lot of skin issues), and grooming that's not too exhausting (again, love my Chows, but the grooming IS exhausting). The Norwegian Elkhound appears perfect for us, but I am wanting to purchase a puppy (or maybe two) from a reputable breeder only.

WyomingEmilyCox2080 Road 25LaGrange82221(205) 807-1345Dog 1 Horse 1I have always wanted an Elkhound since I went to the Westminster Dog Show when I was 10 and fell in love with the breed. However, half my family is allergic to dogs so we've always had hypoallergenic dogs. So now, 15 years later, I live on my own and would love to add an elkhound to my life. I live on a ranch with plenty of room to run. Additionally, I have a small, 13-year-old dog that is my best friend, however, there are many coyotes that run around the ranch and it makes me nervous, so I can't let him out by himself. I think he'd love a "little, big sibling" that could ward off coyotes from coming near the house. Therefore, if I could rescue a young (1-3yr old) elkhound (preferably female), I'd not only get another best friend but a protector for my current dog.

I have more time than ever before in my life to welcome a new family member and dedicate myself to a pups training and socialization and maybe trying my hand with agility or obedience. I am prepared to speak and visit with breeders, breed ambassadors and members of the association that can direct me to a healthy dog with a sound temperament, that has been properly screened and health tested and ultimately needs a good home. I have plenty of friends and neighbors that can speak to my character and my abilities to properly care for a dog. We love our Norwegian family members. Our youngest 1.5 years and we have always tried to have companions similar in age. When Molly passed last year, nearly 15, Gunnar lost his best buddy. Although he mourned her death, he always my big cuddle bunny and always mommy's boy. Our Norwegians play with our youngest, but not like when we are able to have buddies near their age. Our oldest, Kodiak Bear, is 9 and Maggie Sue is 8. Charlotte being the youngest, is missing Ring Gunnar who was like a cuddly bear. _x000D_
_x000D_
We are hoping to find the right family member who will fit with our other three Norwegians as well as enjoy lots of play time and connecting with Charlotte. It may sound odd, but we are used to having four fur babies for the longest time ... and then were blessed with five for about a year ... and now it feels very strange to have only three fur babies in our family. We love our pups ... and the best complement we have ever received is when friends say they want to come back from another life and be one of our dogs!

She was always waiting to see what I wanted, ready to accompany me on our next adventure. I am now much older, and I've had a few dogs, but I have always wanted an elkhound again. It is time. I would love to get a little girl and breed her one day. I am not sure if I'd want a pair. I'd need to start with the girl and see how things progress. I do have a house with a lot of land so I could support more than one dog. I live in Juneau, Alaska so I would be introducing a breed that I think would do quite well in my hometown.
